The last few weeks have been a flurry of activity. On Wed. Sept. 24, I worked part of the day, and then my mom and I headed up to the Chicago area.We stopped at a store to get some food and beverages for our days of work, and then were to Jean and Genersquo;s.We had dinner together and talked for awhile.
That Thursday morning I went with my dad to the docs appointment. The doc was really happy at how his knee has progressed and said he could start using the quad cane more and get away from using the walker. He also got a smaller brace to wear now, that he doesnrsquo;t have to wear all the time. After the appointment I went to medical records at the clinic to get copies; filled out the necessary form and paid the money. My mom and Jean had dropped me off and when I went to call them on my cell to be picked up, my cell phone was dead.Didnrsquo;t realize the battery had run down. Was a little freaked cause I didnrsquo;t remember my momrsquo;s or Jeanrsquo;s cell no.I called my dadrsquo;s house where they had started working and hoped they would pick up which they did. They came and got me and we went to lunch, and then to my dadrsquo;s house to work.
My mom was working in one room, and I first tackled dadrsquo;s clothes making 3 pilesmdash;the keep pile to pack, a give away pile, and a trash pile. After I got the piles organized, Jean folded the clothes and packed the keep ones and got the give away clothes in a bag.Jean later packed books and movies, and I started going through drawers and piles of papers.Man was that a jobMy dad had tons of stuffmdash;some garbage, some important papers, old greeting cards, all sorts of random stuff. It took a long time to go through everything, but I wanted to do it there instead of bringing a bunch of crap here that I would have to go through.I had a shredding pile, dumped the garbage, and put the important keep papers in a separate box. This task continued for days.
Gene came over after work and looked at one of the light fixtures that wasnrsquo;t working. He said he would go get a new one that would work.
My mom and I stayed the night at my dadrsquo;s house, and didnrsquo;t stay up as late as we both thought we would since we were really tired. We got up that Friday and got the 2 rooms that were to be painted ready.Chris got there in the morning and began painting.I didnrsquo;t want to put much work into the house and it will be sold as is, but I thought a couple of the rooms should be painted since they looked absolutely terrible.Jena came over and continued packing. My mom worked in the master bathroom going through things on the shelves and drawers which contained a hodge podge of stuff.Jean and I ran to my dadrsquo;s bank so I could take care of some business there, and stopped at a store to pick up some things and then came back. After lunch, Jean had to leave for a bit.I had called a realtor and she came over and we talked for a bit.She gave a figure of what she felt the house was worth based on other similar type house and so on.She walked through the house and said some things that needed to be updated like stuff with the outlets.I told her that someone had said they might know someone interested in the house, and so I wanted to see if that panned out before I signed. She was very nice and said if I had any questions I could call her.
Shortly after she left, the pastor from dadrsquo;s church came over to check in.I had e-mailed him to say my dad would be moving and if he could go visit him and let the congregation know hersquo;d be moving. We talked for a bit, and after he left, we all got back to our jobs, and Jeannie came back and helped.Gene came after work and we ordered dinner in. He put the new light fixture in, and said he would go get stuff to update how the outlets needed to be and would fix that the next day. After working some more, we all went back to Jean and Genersquo;s and got cleaned up and had a drink and relaxed a bit.
Sat. I called this guy that does plumbing to come by my dadrsquo;s house cause there seemed to be some issues, and he came over and fixed things.Continued working.Jean and Gene continued helping my mom and I.My neighborrsquo;s son came over and looked at the house. Was interested in the house but the price he said he was willing to pay was $60,000 below what the realtor said the house was worth.I said I was willing to negotiate, but not come down that much.I thought maybe theyrsquo;d up the offer, but they didnrsquo;t.
Berto came over when he got off work after 2:00, and Chris and he moved all the junk furniture out to the curb.I had called the trash company and they had said I could put the stuff out and theyrsquo;d take it (though there would be an extra charge if it were a lot of stuff). They were done within a couple hours and the house was minus a lot of furniture.
About an hour after they hauled that stuff, my dadrsquo;s neighbor came over and said there was a guy outside interested in the furniture. He was on a bicycle, and said he had a friend with a pickup truck and theyrsquo;d come back to get the furniture and could he put the stuff he wanted on the side of the house so no one else would take it.In retrospect, should have said no, but I figured if he wanted it would be goodmdash;hersquo;d come back later and it was less stuff out there.Well, he wanted all this stuff, and some of it wasnrsquo;t that great really. Then when he found out I would be selling the house, he said he was interested in that, that he was going through a divorce and needed a place, and he had 2 kids that were with him part of the time and all that.He was talking like he had a lot of money, and when I said the price of the house the realtor said, he quoted $10,000 above that.He even came back later with his kids and when we walked through, he was saying to them, ldquo; This is your room.rdquo; Then because he seemed so serious he was going to buy the house, I figured I better figure out how to sell a house, cause really I had no clue how it worked, especially not going through a realtor. So Jeannie recommended calling someone from my home church who worked for a lawyer.Tried calling, but couldnrsquo;t get through to her that night.Sat. Night Chris, mom, Jean, Gene and I went to El Cortez, my fav Mexican restaurant. It was nice to sit down after having so much fast food.Chris left after dinner.
The next day my mom and I continued to work in the house. The guy interested in the furniture and house came back and said his business partner was working on some things and figuring how much the house was worth and stuff and that he would come back in 2 hours.Well, he never came back.Jean and Gene helped us again. My mom realized she had way more stuff in that house than she thought, and was trying to throw things out.
Monday was more of the same.My mom and I went through stuff in the kitchen. We were getting as much garbage out as possible since Tuesday was garbage day.Called the guy supposedly interested in the housee. He gave a price of what the house was worth and it was a bad connection, so he said he would call me back.He never did.Jeannie helped me in the garage and I threw out a bunch of my old toys (even parting with the Barbie dream house), but kept some along with books that were in there. There were tons of garbage bags and other stuff. That night it was interesting to watch the garbage pickers come.Hopefully we didnrsquo;t throw out too much stuff that was actually valuable, but we just had to get rid of stuff, and we already had a lot to haul back down here. This one hippy looking guy kept coming back, and I think even took bags of trash.People are interesting.
Tuesday continued working.Jeannie packed the fragile stuff which I was grateful for.The garbage people finally came late morning. Now I had called twice ahead of time to make sure they were going to take all the stuff and had given a list of furniture that would be there. They said (like I mentioned before) that they would take it and there might be a charge.Well, when the garbage guys came, they looked at all the stuff and said, ldquo; We canrsquo;t take all this.rdquo; Then they radioed their boss, and I was called, and they said they wouldnrsquo;t take it.I argued with them cause thatrsquo;s NOT what they had told me, and I explained I was from out of town and stuff. So then they said theyrsquo;d have to bring a dumpster which cost $275.I asked if they would then pick it up that day since I had people coming with a Uhaul the next day that needed to get into the driveway and all that. They said they would get it either later that day or early the next morning.I was really frustrated by the whole thing, and didnrsquo;t know how it was going to work to get everything into the dumpster since Chris was gone, and I didnrsquo;t have help for moving heavy stuff.Well, the dumpster came after awhile, and my mom and I went out and started putting garbage bags in (I was ticked the garbage people didnrsquo;t even take more of the bags that were there), and were figuring out how to get other stuff, when the elderly neighbor from next store and his wife came and started helping. He had a dolly, so with that, it was easier to get stuff in.Then the elderly neighbor from the other side came, and helped too.We decided to get all the stuff on the side of the house since that guy never got back in touch. If he came back after that, he was out of luck.We actually got everything in there pretty quickly, and that was a relief.A friend of another neighbor came over to look at the house. He was a nice guy, but a BSer, and couldnrsquo;t tell if he was really interested or not (I guess not since I never heard from him). Jeannie had come early in the morning with us and then left for awhile and came back.We got everything packed, and did a little cleaning, but not as much as I would have liked. When Gene got off work, we got dinner and visited for a little bit.
Wednesday Jean and Gene left for their Vegas vacation.Mom and I got to the house around 8 and cleaned a bit and started loading her van with some of our stuff.Pastor E. And Wayne got there a little before 9 with the Uhaul. My mom had doubts of how everything was going to fit in the trailer, but they knew what they were doing, and got it all packed and finished helping load my momrsquo;s van. They were done in about 2 hours I think and then we headed out.
When we got closer to down here I called my standby people who said they would help with moving things in on this end.Because we were earlier than Pastor originally thought we would be, not everyone could get there right away. But Rick from church got there and helped the guys move the stuff in, and his daughter helped with opening doors, Dell from church helped carry things and then started unpacking and putting things away. I think Pastor saw how exhausted or overwhelmed or whatever I was, because in the elevator at one point he looked at me and said, ldquo;Itrsquo;s going to be alright.rdquo;Stuff was unloaded pretty quickly and Pastor and Wayne dropped my momrsquo;s and my stuff at my house.Lisa came to help after awhile. She washed some dishes and we got kitchen stuff put away.Dell, mom, and I went out to eat finally, and then went to our homes and crashed.
I thought Thursday I would sleep in, after all, we had been putting in 12 plus hours of work at the house and hadnrsquo;t really been getting a lot of sleep. But I woke up and started thinking about stuff that needed to get done, so didnrsquo;t really sleep in.Called the phone company and got service established at my dadrsquo;s apartment, and called the place where my dadrsquo;s moving to tell them about the phone service and ask questions. My mom and I went to the bank, to pick up our mail, lunch, and then to stores to get stuff for my dadrsquo;s place that we needed. While in one of the stores I started developing this massive headache. We went to my dadrsquo;s and were getting stuff unpacked, but everytime I bent down and got up, my head was throbbing and it didnrsquo;t get better even after taking something. Was starting to feel nauseous. My mom was concerned, after all, I rarely get headaches.I said I would be okay; I just needed to sleep. So went home, took a hot bath, ate some oatmeal, andwatched part of the Cubs playoff game, but that wasnrsquo;t going well, and decided I needed to just get to bed since my mom and I were heading back up to Chicago the next morning.

My Old Room Now Empty. My mom asked me if moving all this stuff out made me sad. I said I didnapos;t have time to be sad. We were constantly working and I didnapos;t really dwell on how this was the house I lived most my life that was being emptied and will be sold.
